Review: PGP Whole Disk Encryption for Mac OS X (12)

Sep 06, 2008 in , , , , ,

Last week I boasted about the release of PGP Whole Disk Encryption for Mac OS X and how it is definitely something to consider if data privacy is of utmost importance to you. By encrypting my hard drive, I am able to keep all of my data safe from physical disk access and other such tampering. Since publishing that post I have installed and been using PGP WDE Continue Reading »

Back to College Shopping Guide, Off-Campus Edition (23)

Around this time last year, I wrote a lengthy post detailing items that incoming college students would need to get settled into their new environment. That article ended up becoming one of the most popular posts I’ve ever published and garnered lots of link love. So when several readers suggested via Skribit that I post a follow up article, Continue Reading »

PGP Whole Disk Encryption: Now for OS X (40)

Aug 29, 2008 in , , , , ,

It’s all too often that laptops are stolen and data like company secrets and employee social security numbers is divulged to unauthorized sources. It’s not just that; there are a number of reasons why you might want to enforce the privacy of your digital documents. It might have something to do with the U.S. government’s recent publishing of its policy for seizing laptops at borders or Continue Reading »

Review Shootout: Laptop Bags for Light Computing (24)

Aug 26, 2008 in , , , ,

Living the cloud life is only part of the equation; traveling light and easily being able to move your workspace from your home to class, a coffee shop, a coworking space or office are just as important. That’s why I use a MacBook Air and that’s why I’ve gotten my hands on some fine examples of small computer bags for light computing. Continue Reading »

How To: Live the Cloud Life (48)

There’s no doubt about it, I’m in love with the cloud. Some people might not share my fascination with storage-in-the-cloud and compute-in-the-cloud models but I can’t wait to have the same computing experience regardless of the computer or device I’m using to connect to the Internet. I’ve taken it upon myself to Continue Reading »

Gadget Envy: Sony Cyber-shot T700 Camera (28)

Aug 16, 2008 in , , , ,

The next gadget in my sights is actually a point-and-shoot camera. But why the downgrade from the DSLR? Nope, I’m not looking for a DSLR replacement - rather a complement. There are just some situations where a DSLR doesn’t make sense and I’ve come to learn that in the last year. Enter the upcoming Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700. A point-and-shoot digital camera that is Continue Reading »

Webmaster Jam Session Coming to Atlanta (10)

Aug 15, 2008 in , , ,

It’s finally happening. A big tech event I’ve actually heard about before is coming to Atlanta. It’s called Webmaster Jam Session and it is a forum for designers, developers and the rest of the lot to exchange knowledge and socialize. I usually don’t use my blog to spread the word about events like this but I’m rather excited to finally Continue Reading »

Review: TechRestore Mac Repair (15)

Not too long ago I accidentally dropped my MacBook Air onto a hard floor and the screen cracked. I knew that I did not have the time or patience to let Apple take it away for repair for what, in my experience, would be at least two weeks (not to mention the exorbitant cost). I ended up putting TechRestore.com to the test after a suggestion from a reader (Thanks Mike!). Continue Reading »

First Impressions: Aviary App Suite (26)

Aug 07, 2008 in , , ,

There’s a new kid on the block when it comes to web-based applications for creatives. It’s called Aviary and I don’t believe I have ever seen anything like it. Aviary is soon to become a powerful brand. They are developing a massive suite of such Adobe Flex-based applications. I first heard about Aviary through a Skribit suggestion on my blog many months ago. Continue Reading »

Review: Apple iPhone 3G (29)

Aug 06, 2008 in , , , ,

I have been using the iPhone 3G ever since I waited in line and bought one a bit over two weeks ago. The big question people ask me is if it’s worth the $199 USD and increase in monthly service fees. It is, but only slightly. For the most part, the 2.0 firmware provided most of the improvements, like the App Store, and that’s completely free for first generation iPhone users. Continue Reading »

Unwiring for a Week (18)

Jul 30, 2008 in , , ,

For the next week, I will be completely unwired as I embark on a camping trip with several friends (an electrical engineering student and three pre-law students) in the Middle of No Where, Texas (about 2-3 hours from Austin). According to AT&T’s coverage map, I won’t have much of a cell signal and paired with the iPhone 3G’s horrid battery life, I won’t be getting much use out of it. As far as geeky survival tools are concerned, I’m bringing the Continue Reading »

Review: SumoSac Lounge Seat (11)

Jul 30, 2008 in , ,

I know what you’re thinking - another lounge chair review? Not too long ago I purchased a Sumo Omni and declared it to be the ultimate blogger’s chair for its ability to conform to variety of comfortable computer-friendly positions. Not much has changed with Sumo as I feel the same way about their largest offering, the 6ft by 4ft SumoSac. Continue Reading »

Review: Jawbone 2 Bluetooth Earpiece (22)

Jul 26, 2008 in , , , ,

I’ve never been a fan of bluetooth earpieces. I always thought it was kind of weird to see people walking along and seemingly talking to themselves, or emitting a bright blue pulse from a LED on their earpiece. After hearing about the Aliph Jawbone 2 bluetooth earpiece all too much, I decided to see what all the fuss was Continue Reading »

MacBook Air Susceptible to Gravity (32)

Jul 25, 2008 in , , ,

Unlike the name implies, Apple’s MacBook Air laptop is not lighter than Air nor does it float on Air or any such nonsense. It is actually quite prone to falling and the minimalist nature of the laptop does not protect internal components as do the larger MacBooks. I accidentally put this theory to the test when I dropped my MacBook Air two feet onto a hard surface. Continue Reading »

First Impressions: Nikon D300 DSLR Camera (14)

Jul 22, 2008 in , , ,

For the past three weeks I have been toting around a Nikon D300 camera, courtesy of John Ratcliffe-Lee and his team at the MWW Group. While my Nikon D80 is considered an entry-level DSLR camera, the D300 is more along the lines of a mid-range offering, only bested by the full-frame Nikon D700 and the D3. That privilege doesn’t come cheap though; the current D300 Continue Reading »
